Nepali is an Indian language spoken in Nepal, Bhutan, India and Myanmar. Being the official language of Nepal, Nepali is spoken by around half of the Nepalese as their native language while the rest learn it as their second language. It is spoken also in eastern Nepal, Indian Territory Uttaranchal and Himachal Pradesh. The language spread from Pahari language from the most eastern part of Nepal, a group of language spoken in low-lying areas of the Himalayas. It has a close linkage with some Tibeto-Burman languages in its development process, among which the Newari language is the most significant one that shows a Tibetan-Burman’s influence.
Historical Background
Nepali is very similar to Hindi but is slightly conservative, with less loan words from Persian and English and more from Sanskrit. Nowadays, Nepali in general uses Devanagari alphabet while Bhujimol Nepal is one of the oldest local character.
The ancient literary language of Nepal formed in the 14th century and the rising of Gurkha in the 18th Century formed the basis of the modern Kingdom of Nepal. Therefore Nepali is sometimes referred to as Gorkhali.
